Laura Volpicelli-Daley, PhD: received her B.A. degree from Franklin and Marshall college where she studied Math and English Lit. She earned her PhD in Neuroscience from Emory University, performed her postdoctoral fellowship in Cell Biology at Yale University, and received further training in Neurodegenerative Disease at the University of Pennsylvania. She loves Star Wars movies (Episodes IV, V, VII and VIII only). She is a proud Ravenclaw.

lindsay stoykaLindsay Stoyka , MSTP student: is originally from Detroit, Michigan. She received her undergraduate training at Grand Valley State University, dual majoring in Cell/Molecular Biology and Biomedical Sciences. While there, she completed ecology research under Dr. Jodee Hunt. She joined the Medical Scientist Training Program at UAB in 2013 and is in the Neuroscience Graduate theme. She enjoys nerdy puns, taking her dog backpaking, and complaining about how hot the Alabama summers get. She also provides the lab with delicious Sanders chocolate from Michigan.She plays D&D, is a huge Harry Potter fan and proud Ravenclaw.

nolwazi try 2Nolwazi Gcwensa, Neuroscience PhD student is from South Africa and completed her undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Ocean and Atmosphere Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Thereafter, she completed her BSc Chemistry Honours before earning her MSc in Chemistry with Distinction from UCT specialising in chemical crystallography. She took a hard left in her career and decided to pursue her PhD in Neuroscience at UAB. She is also a Fulbright Scholar as part of the cultural exchange for the 2019 cohort from SA. If you catch Nolwazi in all spaces, she is jamming out to music and/or performing on an imaginary stage with no audience or dragging innocent people into heated philosophical debates. The Pottermore House Sorting quiz says she is sometimes a Slytherin and sometimes a Gryffindor. She thinks this feels accurate.  

drakeDrake Thrasher, Research Assistant. Drake is from Fyffe, AL where he played football, offensive line, for Fyffe High School. Drake graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Sciences from UAB. After working in research for a couple of years, Drake plans to pursue an MD-PhD. In his spare time, he enjoys going hiking as well as traveling to different cities and national parks. Drake recently admitted to also playing D&D, and is a proud Ravenclaw. 

Megha Viswanathan, Research Assistant. Megha grew up in Kerala, India, and moved to Portland, Oregon for college. She graduated from Lewis and Clark College with honors in Psychology and Neuroscience and Chemistry minors. She is tri-lingual, a bibliophile, and passionate about Neuroscience, feminism and food. She also refuses to take the Pottermore House Sorting quiz and insists she is a proud Muggle.

Vijay Singh, PhD is from Uttarakhand, India. He did his PhD in Life Sciences from the Institute of Microbial Technology, in Chandigarh, India. After completing his PhD, he did his research training at the National Institute of Immunology, in New Delhi, India. He moved to the University of Pennsylvania to do his postdoctoral training, where he studied ribosome translocation related diseases. An interest in neurodegenerative diseases prompted him to join the Volpicelli lab as a postdoctoral fellow. In his spare time, he loves doing photography.  

Charlotte Franziska Brzozowski grew up in Ravensburg, a small town in the most beautiful part of Germany. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the University of Ulm, and a Master’s student from the University of Tuebingen. She is a very energetic and optimistic person, in and outside lab. In her free time, she likes to do all kind of outdoor activities, practicing yoga and traveling. She speaks five languages and is obsessed with the ocean.

annerAnner Harris, PREP student: is originally from Macon, Georgia, but lived in Oklahoma as a teenager. She graduated from Agnes Scott College withhoners in Neuroscience and a minor in Music. She enjoys trying new food, traveling to new countries, binge-watching shows on Netflix/Hulu, and listening to music. 

baraaBaraa Hijaz, Ne uroscience student, UAB Honors College: is an Arab-American from Montgomery, Alabama. Upon graduation, he intends to jointly pursue an MD/PhD degree. Outside of lab, you can find Baraa picking up and putting down heavy things at the UAB Rec, kicking around a soccer ball, taking a hike at Red Mountain park, or drinking a medium chocolate gladiator with peanut butter and blueberries at Smoothie King.


tiaraTiara Janado is an undergraduate Neuroscience major in the Honors College. She was born in Honolulu, HI and raised in Phenix City, AL. She is involved in several organizations on campus such as the Minority Association of PreHealth Sudents, True to You, BWomen, AED. When not studying for classes or in lab, you can find her volunteering, spending time with her sorority sisters,binge watching Netflix, traveling or trying new foods!

Ashwin Narayanan is an undergraduate Neuroscience major in the Honors College. He is from Naperville, IL and is involved around campus through the Indian Cultural Association and student government. In his free time, he enjoys basketball, working out, and watching movies. We have a continuing argument in the lab over which pizza is best- Chicago deep dish or New York Style.   

dresonDreson Russell is a undergraduate Neuroscience Honors student on the premed track. He is a native of Dadeville, Alabama. He is part of many organizations throughout campus including Blazer Male Excellence Network (BMEN) and Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED). During his free time, he enjoys playing basketball, football, volunteering, and spending time with his pets.

is a biology major on the pre-med track. She is also minoring in chemsitry and Spanish. She was born and raised in Bessemer, AL. She is the community service chair for the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS), and well as a member of the on campus organization, Coins for Cancer. In her free time she loves to paint, read and cook.

She is Indian and was raised in Madison, Alabama. She enjoys Marvel Movies, playing the violin, and involving herself with the many organization on campus, like UAB USGA (Freshman Forum).
