He has a combined research and clinical appointment with Dr. Chen as his scientific mentor. He has been engaged in scientific research for fifteen years. Over this time he contributed to scientific knowledge in the fields of molecular genetics, enzymology, oncologic biomarkers, and clinical outcomes. His focus since entering the field of surgery has been on biomarker research for hepatopancreatobiliary cancers and targeting of the Notch pathway in neuroendocrine tumors. He has presented on novel uses of established biomarkers in pancreatic cancer and was the first to investigate the clinical utility of a bile based biomarker in patients with bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma).
