Rachael Guenterb150
Graduate Student

Short Bio:
Rachael is currently a graduate student in the Graduate Biomedical Sciences (GBS) Cancer Biology theme at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She received her B.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from North Carolina State University in May of 2017. For her undergraduate research, she had the opportunity to work in two labs, each unique in their research focuses but both labs played a crucial role in fostering her dedication to science. She worked in a plant pathology laboratory under the mentorship of Jean B. Ristaino for two years. She worked on a project studying Phytophthora infestans, the causative agent of the Irish Potato Famine, which sparked her interest in studying biology. To diversify her undergraduate research, she simultaneously completed almost two years of research at RTI International in the Energy Technology Division. This experience broadened her skills as a chemical engineer by requiring her to intuitively and effectively design bench-scale systems for the purification of highly saline industrial waste waters. She is now pursuing her doctoral degree in the laboratories of Dr. Renata Jaskula-Sztul and Dr. X. Margaret Liu. Their research integrates cancer biology and engineering to develop targeted neuroendocrine cancer therapeutics.
