Medical Student

Short Bio:
Brendon is a second-year medical student at the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UASOM) in Birmingham, Alabama. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a minor in Military Science from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. Brendon currently serves in the United States Army National Guard as a Platoon Leader, volunteers as the fundraising officer for the free clinic Equal Access Birmingham (EAB), leads EAB’s Acute Care Clinic, is an active member of the American Physician Scientist Association, and coordinates UASOM student groups in both oncology and medical ethics. He is an active participant in mentorship programs as both an Army Officer and medical student, and evaluates applicants for UASOM admissions.

Brendon’s previous research experience spans the investigation of the role of novel microRNAs in the regulation of genes in infectious bacterial species and the effects of mesenchymal stem cells in the prevention of acute kidney injury induced by alkylating chemotherapeutic agents. As a future physician-scientist, he hopes to leverage a personal history with cancer and a passion for treating cancer patients to pursue a career in surgical oncology. He is currently an MD/PhD research student in Dr. Herbert Chen’s lab investigating neuroendocrine tumor biology and creating novel therapeutic strategies.
